The fee to adopt is $500. Payment is required at the time of the adoption. All adult dogs are spayed or neutered upon arrival; puppies typically are too young and adopter will be responsible for spay/neuter in Vermont (reflected in a reduction of the fee to $400 for unaltered puppies). The Adoption Fee covers the cost of pre-adoption medical exams, age-appropriate spay/neuter, vaccinations, heartworm tests, medication, food, and transportation.

All adoptions require an application. All applications must identify a dog that is currently listed on our Adoptable Dogs page (general applications will not be accepted). Note: Unless otherwise noted, all dogs are currently with rescues in the south and cannot be met in Vermont prior to adoption.

The minimum age for adopting a rescue is 24 years of age.

Puppies have special needs and will only be placed in a home where they can be monitored often (they should not be left alone for more than 4 hours at a time). Please consider your time and space limitations before applying to adopt a puppy.

Completing an adoption application allows you to consider the various factors that influence your choice of dog: what dog will most closely match the environment you can provide; what dog will blend with your family; what a typical day will look like for your dog; how much exercise and attention you can provide; and various other considerations. If FLOD VT determines that the dog you applied for is not a match for your lifestyle, we will work with you to find a dog that best fits your circumstances. Most dogs are currently in a foster home in the South and will be transported to Vermont upon adoption (refer to the bios on the Adoptable Dogs page if you're unsure about the location of the dogs).
